*New* Pioneers of Spanish Art – From María Rodrigo Bellido to Niña de los Peines
This musical project tells the story of Spanish female writers, dancers, composers, guitarists and singers, both in flamenco and classical music. Their works contain true treasures, which we bring back to life in this 90-minute concert.
Following our enthusiastically received programme on the life of Federico García Lorca, who used his art to champion the rights of Spanish women, this new event focuses on the art of these women themselves.
We present compositions by the Spanish mezzo-soprano and composer Pauline Viardot-García (1821–1910), who became famous throughout Europe and organised salons in Paris where composers such as Chopin and Liszt performed.
A little later, María Rodrigo Bellido (1888–1967) became the first woman to write a Spanish opera that is still performed today. From the same generation comes the composer and pianist Emiliana Zubeldía (1888–1987), who published an album of songs based on flamenco melodies. We also interpret letras by the legendary cantaora Niña de los Peines, whose voice revolutionised flamenco. These pieces are also accompanied by flamenco dance.
These artists created female characters with character, humour and independence, far removed from the traditional roles of the faithful lover, the coquettish seductress or the maid. Their flamenco songs celebrate strength, pride and freedom instead of suffering and submission. During the concert, we experience how these extraordinary women gave Spanish art a new, feminine face.

Canciones Españolas Antiguas: A tribute to Federico García Lorca
The Canciones Españolas Antiguas belong to the most beloved Spanish songs. Inspired by old folk tales and songs, the Spanish poet and playwright Federico García Lorca created this song cycle in 1931. It is performed by both classical and flamenco musicians. In this recital we bring tribute to Lorca and his celebration of the diversity of Spanish culture and history. We present a selection of his songs accompanied by some work of contemporaries to tell the story of his life and work. The result is 1,5 hour (including break) full of music, dance and storytelling.

We will revive the atmosphere both in sound and visuals of the famous Café de Chinitas in Málaga, which was a place where artists such as the composer Manuel de Falla, and the painters Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí came together to celebrate, reinterpret and refashion the cultural heritage of Spain. Together with Lorca this was the Spanish uniquely gifted avant-garde, known as the Generation ’27. Member of this group was also the flamenco dancer and classical singer La Argentinita, with whom Lorca created and performed the Canciones Españolas Antiguas.
The outbreak of the gruelling Spanish civil war in 1936 and the murder of Lorca by the Falangists put a tragic end to this outburst of creativity. Still Lorca’s legacy could not be silenced. His poems, plays and songs continue to inspire writers and artists. His ideas about the role of women in society, acceptance of homosexuality and his respect for the Arabic and Jewish heritage of Spain are as topical today as a century ago.
Eline Bosma (Sopran) and Anoush Saadat (Flamenco Guitarist) started their collaboration when they were still students at the conservatoire in Rotterdam and share their love for the Spanish sounds and rhythms.
Anoush Saadat (1991) presently lives in Munich. He became enrolled at the prestigious Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville at the age of fifteen. He studied at the Rotterdam Conservatoire with Paco Peña. In 2011 he was awarded the first prize at the Certamen de Jóvenes Flamencos de Sevilla both for his performance as accompanist and as soloist. Later that same year he performed at the Lope de Vega Theater in Seville together with great artists such as Eduardo Rebollar amongst others. At present Anoush Saadat is performing as a soloist, in traditional flamenco ensembles and also as an accompanist of dance and singing lessons.

Eline Bosma (1998) presently lives in Nürnberg. She was admitted to the Codarts Rotterdam Conservatory at the age of seventeen and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Classical Singing with tenor Marcel Reijans. She is currently completing her Master’s degree in Opera with Professor Brigitte Geller at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg. At present, she is developing into a versatile soloist, with Spanish repertoire playing an important role alongside classical opera and oratoria. In her Master’s thesis, she focussed on the influence of Spanish culture and flamenco on various classical composers and also showed her passion for flamenco dance.
